2019 ECEL Holiday Classic Top Performers

18U Premier

Forward – Tom Pryymak, Mercer Chiefs

Pryymak stood out in the role of playmaker, leading Mercer to a sweep of its four Holiday Classic opponents. Pryymak set up all three goals in a 3-2 victory over Boston Advantage to start the weekend, then scored in consecutive wins over Team Virtua and Westlake before assisting on four more in a 7-2 rout of the New Hampshire Avalanche, raising his season totals to a division-best 14 points in eight games.

 

Defense – Jake Measel, Wenatchee Wolves

Measel helped Wenatchee post three impressive victories and nearly an upset of first-place Hill Academy with his stellar blueline play, as the Wolves held opponents to just five goals in four contests. After the hard-fought 2-1 defeat against Hill, Measel scored an important goal in a 4-0 win over Westchester before notching two more, including the gamer-winner, in a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Titans.

Goaltender – Hayden Dunford, Hill Academy

Dunford backstopped Hill to three consecutive victories to close out the Holiday Classic, including a 29-save, 5-4 overtime thriller over the Titans. He turned aside 31 shots in frustrating the Elite Hockey Program in a 6-1 win as well as held off a determined Wenatchee club during a 2-1 victory with a stellar 17-save performance. Dunford’s six overall victories in seven starts is the most in the division to go along with a 1.69 goals-against average and .935 save percentage.

18U Showcase

Forward – Billy Hartnett, East Coast Spartans

Hartnett registered at least a point in all four of the second-place Spartans’ victories, including notching his first hat trick of the season during a 6-2 win over Tahoe Prep. He netted a pair in a 4-1 over the New Jersey Titans to open the Holiday Classic and added a goal and assist during tough 5-4 closing clash victory against the Mercer Chiefs, giving Hartnett 12 points in eight games this season.

Defense – Sam Howell, East Coast Spartans

Howell proved an offensive force in three of the Spartans’ four victories, posting a goal and four assists during the weekend. He set up two goals in the 4-1 win over the Titans before scoring his second goal of the season and assisting on another in the 6-4 triumph over Tahoe. Howell, who now has nine points in seven games, also assisted on a power-play goal in East Coast’s 4-3 win over the 95 Giants.

Goaltender – Samuel Haynes, Texas Warriors

Haynes improved to 4-0-0 on the season with back-to-back solid victories for the Warriors, turning aside 48 of the 53 shots he faced during the Holiday Classic. He stymied Monument Hockey Academy with a 27-save effort during a 5-2 win before holding off Tahoe with 21 stops in a 4-3 victory. Haynes lowered his goals-against average to 2.68 in four starts for third-place Texas.

16U Premier

Forward – Spencer Stenholm, Wenatchee Wilderness

After being shut out during the ECEL fall showcase, Stenholm scored in each of the Wilderness’ Holiday Classic contests, including netting the tying goal – his second of the game – that forced overtime in a 5-4 nail-biting victory over the New Jersey Devils. Stenholm closed the weekend with a dominating performance against Mercer with a goal and three assists, leading Wenatchee to a third straight win.

Defense – Shea Thibault, Elite Hockey Program

Thibault proved pivotal to the stingy Elite defensive corps, which limited its four Holiday Classic opponents to just five goals, highlighted by a 2-0 shutout of the New Jersey Devils and shootout victories against Boston Advantage and the New Hampshire Avalanche. Thibault scored once and assisted on another goal in a 3-2 win over the New Hampshire Monarchs and added the first-place Elite’s insurance goal against the Devils.

Goaltender – Sam Edmands, Hill Academy

Edmands lowered his goals-against average to 1.33 after three starts, going 2-0-0 during the weekend while posting his first shutout of the season with a 38-save performance against the 95 Giants. Edmands’ .957 save percentage is second best in the division, aided by a solid 31-save effort in third-place Hill’s 4-2 win over the Westchester Express. 

16U Showcase

Forward – Felix-Antoine Journet, Mount Academy

Journet scored the game-winner for Mount in a 5-4 win over Boston Advantage, one of six tallies he registered in his second-place club’s four consecutive victories. Journet, who was denied any goals but still assisted on seven during the Fall Classic, flashed his scoring touch in every Holiday Classic contest, including netting two and assisting on another in a 10-3 blowout of the Northeast Generals. 

Defense – Colin Kwak, Atlanta Fire

Kwak stood out as part of Atlanta’s shutdown defense unit, as the Fire posted three victories, holding opponents to just eight goals in four games. Kwak also chipped in offensively with a goal and assist in back-to-back victories over the Mercer Chiefs and New Jersey Titans and also added an assist in a dominating win over the Mercer 15U club.

Goaltender – Beau Lane, Boston Advantage

Lane posted his second shutout of the season with an 18-save effort against the Mercer Chiefs 15U squad, lowering his overall goals-against average to a miniscule 0.50 in four starts. The West Coast Renegades managed to crack Lane, who sits near the top of the division with a .974 save percentage, for a single goal on 25 shots in spite of the first-place Advantage skating to a convincing 6-1.
